This week, we continued to learn about cell reproduction. This process is also called mitosis. We went over the simulation, and talked about chromosomes and centrosomes. We also went over the steps in mitosis.
There are 3 types of chromo- things that we learned about. Chromosomes are an easy-to-read DNA package. They come in pairs. There are 2 chromosomes in a pair. Chromotin are unwound chromosomes. Chromotids are the X-shaped chromosomes. The 2 chromosomes in a chromotid are joined together by the centromere. These are pulled apart during metaphase.
There are also 3 types of centro- things. Centrioles are organelles in the cells. Centrioles split in half, and become 2 centrioles. Those 2 are called centrosomes. During metaphase, the centrosomes make spindle fibers and attach to the centromeres. The centromeres hold the chromatids together. In metaphase, the centrosomes line up the chromatids in the middle. In anaphase, the centromeres let the chromatids split up, and the chromosomes are pulled to the poles by the spindle fibers.
