Science Class- Dec. 15-19

This week, we continued to learn more about DNA.  On Monday, we watched a Bill Nye movie.  There was a lot of info in there, and I probably missed some things.  I don't like watching movies to learn things, because the people talk about something important for like ten seconds, and I don't realize that it is important until they are done talking about it.

The next day (I think it was the next day), we got the results back from the biology people.  The results were from the electrophoresis, and the DNA was tested from the suspects and the hair.  Drew's DNA matched up with the hair.  All of the other DNAs were different.  The electrophoresis shows the DNA because the electrical current separates the different length strands.  This would mean that Drew most likely took the moon rock.  Then, at the end of class, Mr. Finley finds his stolen rock in his pocket.

Then, we had to read and take notes from a book.  We learned about cell cycles and cell reproduction.  Different types of cells reproduce at different rates.  For example, liver cells split themselves in half every two years, while skin cells reproduce every two days.  During the normal times in a cell cycle, cells go through DNA replication, protein synthesis, photosynthesis, fermentation, and respiration.  We did not get to go over them well in class, but I think that except for DNA replication they all have to do with the cell's energy.
