If I could go back in time, I would tell myself about initial and final states. I would tell myself that there is just one transfer of energy between the initial and final states. The experiments when we dropped the dictionaries were the most helpful when it came to initial and final states because they are easy to visualize. In th first one, we did work on the dictionaries by lifting the system, and it gravitational potential energy. On the table, the system had no energy, but at the end, when it was in the air, it did have energy. It was highest in the air when it had the most gravitational potential energy. The other experiment when we dropped the dictionaries was also helpful. When it was in the, at the initial state, it had gravitational potential energy. The final state was when it hit the ground. etween the two states, the gravitational potential energy changed to kinetic energy.
